A professional gel manicure can last anywhere from two to four weeks depending on how you care for your nails after leaving the salon. While the curing process creates a durable finish, your daily habits play an enormous role in how long that finish stays pristine.
1. Wear Gloves for Household Tasks
Exposure to water, cleaning chemicals, and detergents is one of the primary causes of premature gel lifting. Keep a pair of rubber gloves under the kitchen sink and make it a habit to slip them on before washing dishes, cleaning surfaces, or handling harsh chemicals.
2. Apply Cuticle Oil Daily
Cuticle oil is your gel manicure's best friend. It keeps the skin around your nails flexible and hydrated, which prevents it from pulling away from the gel and creating lift points. Apply a drop to each nail before bed and massage it in gently.
3. Avoid Extreme Temperature Changes
Gel polish can become brittle when exposed to extreme cold, and prolonged heat can soften it. Wearing gloves in winter and being mindful of hot water exposure helps maintain the integrity of the gel layer.
4. Do Not Peel or Pick
When a small chip or lift appears, the temptation to peel the gel off can be strong. Resist it. Peeling gel polish removes layers of your natural nail plate, causing thinning and weakness that takes months to repair.
5. Book Your Fills on Time
As your nails grow, the gap between the gel and the cuticle creates a leverage point where water and debris can get underneath. Booking a fill or a fresh set every two to three weeks prevents this and keeps your nails healthy under the gel.
The best thing you can do for your gel manicure is to treat your nails like jewels, not tools.
