The Russian manicure has gained immense popularity in recent years, and for good reason. Unlike traditional manicure techniques that rely on nippers and pushers, the Russian method uses an electric file with specialized bits to achieve a pristine cuticle area that allows polish to sit flush against the nail.
At our salon, we have spent years refining this technique, combining the precision of the Russian approach with a gentler touch that prioritizes nail health above all else. The result is a manicure that looks flawless, lasts longer, and actually improves the condition of your nails over time.
What Makes It Different
The key difference lies in the preparation. Traditional manicures typically involve soaking the hands in water, which causes the nail plate to expand. When polish is applied to this expanded nail, it contracts as it dries, leading to premature chipping. The Russian manicure eliminates this step entirely, working on dry nails for a more stable foundation.
The electric file, or e-file, is used at low speed with diamond or ceramic bits designed specifically for cuticle work. In trained hands, this tool can remove only the dead skin around the nail without touching the living tissue beneath. The result is a clean, polished look that frames the nail beautifully.
A great manicure is not about removing as much cuticle as possible. It is about knowing exactly where the living tissue ends and the dead skin begins.

The Safety Question
When performed by a properly trained technician, the Russian manicure is entirely safe. The concern around this technique stems from untrained practitioners who use the e-file too aggressively, potentially damaging the nail matrix or causing irritation to the proximal fold.
- Always ensure your technician has specific Russian manicure training
- The e-file should be used at the lowest effective speed
- There should be no pain, bleeding, or discomfort during the process
- Proper sterilization of all tools between clients is essential
- Results should show a clean cuticle area without redness or sensitivity
Our Approach at Shanti's
Every member of our team has undergone specialized training in Russian manicure techniques. We use only medical-grade bits, sterilized between every appointment, and we work at gentle speeds that our clients often describe as soothing rather than aggressive. Our approach combines the visual precision of the Russian method with the nurturing philosophy that defines everything we do.
If you have never experienced a Russian manicure, we invite you to book a session and feel the difference for yourself. Your nails and your polish will thank you.
